Day in and day out, we hear about the
extraordinary efforts made by President Calderón
and his administration to make Mexico a safer and
more secure nation, most recently through the October
proposal of the Mérida Initiative. The United
States stands with Mexico in its efforts because drugs
and violence are not threats faced by Mexico alone.
If our neighbors suffer, so too do we suffer.
Just the same, if our neighbors enjoy prosperity, without
fear from drugs and violence, we too will enjoy prosperity.
A perfect example of the U.S. and Mexico working together
for the sake of security is the extradition of an accused
murderer to the United States to stand trial. He was arrested
in Mexico and the Mexican government has agreed to extradite
him to the U.S. later this morning.
This will be the 80th such formal extradition in the calendar
year – an all-time record for our two countries. It
is also indicative of how we will enjoy many more successes
on a similar level as Mexico and the United States work
together even more closely through the Mérida Initiative.
That is how we have focused on those who will do us harm.
SENTRI, on the other hand, is a program that helps those
who will make us stronger. SENTRI is no small program that
only works for the select few. Here in Hidalgo, there are
2,372 people who already use SENTRI, and I hear that many
more are signing up each day. Across our shared border there
are over 151,000 travelers from both sides enrolled in the
SENTRI program.
Indeed, in the 12 years since the first SENTRI Lane opened
in Otay Mesa, California, SENTRI has helped millions of
people cross the border safely and more quickly, saving
an uncountable number of hours that they would otherwise
have spent waiting. The numerous ‘best practice’
awards that SENTRI has earned over the years have acknowledged
the importance of this program.
But all of the numbers and facts and awards in the world
can’t portray the real story. The real story is that
this SENTRI Lane opening is good for communities on both
sides of the border. The real story is that this is yet
another example of the Mexican and U.S. governments working
together in a joint effort for the benefit of Mexicans and
Americans.
The real story is that, while some may call for walls between
our countries and focus only on a secure border, those who
know realize that no border will be truly secure unless
it is prosperous on both sides. This new SENTRI Lane provides
another opportunity for citizens of the U.S. and Mexico
to work toward that prosperity. | Día tras

sea una nación más segura y pacífica,
más recientemente mediante la propuesta de
la Iniciativa Mérida en octubre. Los Estados
Unidos apoyan los esfuerzos de México porque
las drogas y la violencia no son amenazas solamente
contra México. Si nuestros vecinos padecen,
nosotros padecemos también.
De igual manera, si nuestros vecinos disfrutan de
la prosperidad, sin temor a las drogas y la violencia,
nosotros también gozaremos de la prosperidad.
Un ejemplo perfecto de cómo los Estados Unidos
y México trabajamos juntos en busca de la seguridad
es la extradición de un hombre acusado de cometer
homicidio en los Estados Unidos. Fue arrestado en
México, y el gobierno mexicano ha aceptado
extraditarlo a los Estados Unidos esta mañana.
Esta es la extradición formal número
ochenta en este año, un récord nunca
antes visto entre nuestros dos países. También
es indicativo de cómo podremos disfrutar de
muchos otros éxitos a niveles similares si
México y los Estados Unidos colaboran aún
más estrechamente a través de la Iniciativa
Mérida.
Así es como ponemos atención a quienes
buscan hacernos daño. SENTRI, por otra parte,
es un programa que ayuda a aquellos que nos hacen
más fuertes. SENTRI no es un programa pequeño
que sirva sólo a un público selecto.
Aquí en Hidalgo existen 2,372 personas que
ya usan el SENTRI, y tengo entendido que muchos otros
lo solicitan diariamente. A lo largo de nuestra
frontera ya hay más de 151,000 viajeros de
ambos lados que utilizan el programa SENTRI.
Ciertamente, en los 12 años desde que la primera
línea SENTRI abrió en Mesa de Otay,
California, SENTRI ha ayudado a millones de personas
a cruzar la frontera de manera segura y más
rápida, ahorrando un incontable número
de horas que habrían tenido que esperar de
otra manera. Los númerosos premios por
ser una práctica óptima que ha recibido
SENTRI a lo largo de los años han reconocido
la importancia de este programa.
Pero todos las cifras y datos fríos en el
mundo no pueden comunicar la verdadera historia.
La verdadera historia es que la inauguración
de la línea SENTRI es buena para ambos lados
de la frontera. La verdadera historia es que
éste es un ejemplo más de trabajo conjunto
entre los gobiernos de México y Estados Unidos
para beneficiar tanto a los mexicanos como a los estadounidenses.
La verdadera historia es que, aunque algunos pidan
muros entre nuestros países, y piensen sólo
en una frontera asegurada, quienes verdaderamente
saben se dan cuenta que ninguna frontera quedará
auténticamente asegurada a menos de que sea
próspera en ambos lados. Esta nueva línea
SENTRI ofrece una oportunidad más para que
los ciudadanos de ambos países trabajen unidos
hacia ese fin.
