Mexico City
September 21, 2005
Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished representatives of the business community, members of the press corps, and friends:
As President Bush’s representative to Mexico, one of my favorite responsibilities is recognizing the contributions of businesses and the private sector to make life better in their communities. Today I am proud to acknowledge the hard work of several groups who have dedicated themselves to helping others through an important annual event. The American Charity Tennis Classic has been held every year in Mexico City since 1996. On April 15 of this year, 124 players donated their time, effort, and skill, to raise funds for four very worthy charitable organizations.
The funds raised by American Charity Tennis Classic will strengthen the programs of these four organizations we are honoring today, and their focus on teamwork, sound judgment, and self-discipline. I am pleased to see the private sector and community organizations working together to help the disadvantaged secure a place on the playing field. Allow me to talk briefly about the missions of these special charities: - In collaboration with the American Society of Mexico, Fondo Unido has been distributing funds to worthy charities since 1955.
- Manos que Ayudan distributes medicine to poor children and to the elderly. They feed 150 young people each day, and even sponsor classes in English and in computer skills.
- CADI produces furniture for export to the United States, and uses the proceeds to help poor children in Mexico.
- Prendetenis helps children and young adults who suffer from Downs Syndrome and mental disabilities, by giving them access to sporting opportunities.
These four organizations deserve our support and praise for reaching out and helping underprivileged children use their talents to the fullest.
It gives me great pleasure to thank the following institutions, and their representatives, for their combined contribution of $35,000 U.S. dollars, raised during the American Charity Tennis Classic of 2005: - HSBC BANK, REPRESENTED BY ROY CAPLE AND GEOFFREY FITSCHE;
