Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico
Honorable Lazaro Cardenas Batel, Governor of the state of Michoacan,
Distinguished members of the board of the Cultural Institute,
Teachers, students, managers,
Good morning! ¡Muy buenos días!
Thank you for the tour of this historic institution and for the warm welcome to your school. It is my honor to be with you today on your 50th anniversary.
I have always been a firm believer that diplomacy takes place on a grass roots level. Whether reading the history of far away places or having a cup of coffee with someone from a different country, true diplomacy is accomplished through understanding. And true understanding happens in places like this.
Created by the U.S. Government in the 1950s and 1960s, Insitututos Culturales Mexicanos formed the backbone of English language teaching and cultural exchange between the U.S. and Mexico. Today, the Institutos Culturales not only provide a solid foundation in English language acquisition, but serve as a place where those who care about education, culture and language can exchange ideas about societies and culture. When we learn about others, we deepen our knowledge of ourselves.
Over the years the Institutos Culturales have become private institutions, but they continue to be managed by Mexicans who care about education and understand the importance of knowing your neighbor. The Instituto Cultural de Michoacán continues as a vibrant center for English language study in Morelia. The US Mission in Mexico is working with you to identify teacher training, student resources, and cultural activities, so you can continue to serve as a link between Mexico and the U.S. and provide opportunities for growth for all that walk through your doors.
I would like to present this certificate to recognize and honor the 50 years that the Instituto Cultural Mexicano Norteamericano has contributed to the teaching of English and to understanding the society and culture of the United States of America.
The U.S. Mission in Mexico is also donating these books for the library and teachers’ use. We are also happy to make a donation to buy a projector and large white-board for the Instituto Cultural. We hope these gifts provide ample opportunities for students to learn about both of our great countries and the friendship we have created.
Congratulations to you all and best wishes for the Institute’s next 50 years!
Thank you.
