Ambassador Garza: Environmental Links to Trade

Mexico City
09-08-04

“Pollution does not recognize national borders, it does not respect political differences, and it does not worry about who is affected. Environmental protection is one of those issues where we’re all in it together. For these simple reasons, our three countries are working together to solve our common environmental problems,” said U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza today at the 12th International Environmental Congress.

At a reception recognizing the accomplishments of NAFTA in the environmental arena, Ambassador Garza spoke along with Secretary of the Environment Ing. Alberto Cardenas Jiménez and Canadian Ambassador to Mexico Gaëtan Lavertu. Ambassador Garza addressed the impact of the environment on trade and NAFTA.

“Presidents Bush and Fox have established an initiative called the Partnership for Prosperity that harnesses corporate stewardship and economic growth with social development in a way that grows business and puts people to work while protecting the environment,” added Ambassador Garza.

The 12th International Environmental Congress and Enviro-Pro Tecomex 2004, the largest environmental and energy trade show in Latin America, are being held at the World Trade Center September 8-10. Enviro-Pro attracts over 5,000 visitors and over 130 international exhibitors. Conference speakers cover a wide range of environmental topics from the specific challenges of municipalities to the administration and management of water and waste.

The U.S. Embassy is sponsoring a USA Pavillion; twenty U.S. environmental companies and two state offices are also participating.
