Mexico City, December 2, 2004 - “Violeta Hernandez is a remarkable young girl who has already demonstrated strong leadership qualities. This week she’ll travel to Washington D.C. at the invitation of Secretary of Education Rod Paige,” said U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza. “We’re delighted that Violeta will visit the U.S. now, and hope that she’ll be part of an educational exchange program in the future.”
Secretary of Education Rod Paige met Violeta Hernandez, a young student at the Benito Juarez School during his first trip to the Mexico in 2002. Then in the third grade, Violeta was chosen to welcome the Secretary on behalf of the student body. Her articulate remarks impressed him, as well as her unexpected request for computers for her school.
As a result of Violeta’s request, the Department of Education and the U.S. Embassy provided computers to the school, which were presented in a ceremony during Secretary Paige’s 2003 visit to Mexico. Last month they met again when Secretary Paige attended the Binational Commission meetings, and at that time he invited Violeta and her mother to visit
Washington D. C.
The Department of Education also invited three officials from the Ministry of Education (SEP) to Washington on December 7 to present information about Mexico’s use of educational technology in the classroom.
This morning Ambassador Garza greeted Violeta and her mother following their visa appointment.
