Announcement of New Scholarship Aid Made During a
Round-Table Discussion with Snow at the
Ibero-Americana University
Featuring Future Mexican Economic and Business Leaders
Mexico City, December 15, 2005 – “At its core, the U.S.-Mexico partnership is a joint effort to bring prosperity to people on both sides of our common border. Support for higher education is critical to our vital joint effort,” said United States Ambassador Tony Garza. “By providing additional funding to support the Training, Internships, Exchanges, and Scholarship Program, the United States is demonstrating its confidence in Mexico’s future by investing in our southern neighbor’s most valuable resources: Mexico’s young people and their universities.”
During a meeting today with future Mexican leaders at the Ibero-Americana University in Mexico City, visiting U.S. Secretary John W. Snow announced that the United States will provide an additional US $3 million to create ten new U.S-Mexico university partnerships, to be matched dollar-for-dollar with funds from the participating schools and their private sector partners. This new contribution will advance the U.S-Mexico Training, Internships, Exchanges, and Scholarships Higher Education initiative, inaugurated by Presidents Bush and Fox in September 2001. The United States will contribute a total of $35 million to this important program, to support more than 750 student scholarships and 50 partnerships involving American and Mexican universities. The universities and their collaborating partners are expected to provide an additional US$15 million.
Secretary Snow also said he expected the newly-announced call for applications to benefit small-scale rural entrepreneurs, strengthen democracy, support environmental resource management, enhance criminal justice and rule of law programs, and create sustainable ecotourism projects.
