U.S. Government Supports Small Business Incubation Program

Garza: “Ninety percent of the new businesses in Mexico in the next decade will be established by micro and small enterprises, creating the majority of new jobs. Their growth strengthens trade between our two countries and sustainable economic development in Mexico.”

Mexico City, October 27, 2006. –“Small and medium-size businesses have the capacity to accelerate growth, promote innovation, and reduce poverty. The private sector is strengthened when competition is enhanced and entrepreneurs are encouraged,” said U.S. Ambassador Antonio O. Garza, Jr.

The Embassy’s U.S. Commercial Service and the U.S. Agency for International Development are participating in the International Summit for Small and Medium Businesses 2006 held for the first time in Mexico October 25-28 in Veracruz.

The U.S. government also directly supports small business development through a TIES (Training, Internships, Exchanges, and Scholarships) partnership between the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Universidad Veracruzana. Their collaborative activities, supported by a grant of U.S. $300,000, are focused on strengthening the Mexican National Association of Small Business Development Centers.

“Incubating small businesses helps economies flourish. By assisting entrepreneurs with business plans, providing access to credit, and strengthening business skills, we can make more small businesses successful in Mexico,” added Garza.
