Peace Officers’ Memorial Day
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, May 15, 2008- “Law enforcement officers are
the watchmen, the peacekeepers, and the protectors of democratic
societies who uphold the laws and regulations that provide
citizens with security. With courage and resolve, they risk
their welfare to keep us safe. So today, I would like to recognize
the bravery of these public servants, in both Mexico and the
United States, who protect their fellow citizens.
“Since 1962, the United States has recognized May 15 of each
year as "Peace Officers' Memorial Day" and the week
in which it falls as "Police Week." In the words
of President Bush, ‘As we observe Peace Officers' Memorial
Day and Police Week, we pause to pay tribute to those who
serve in law enforcement. On this occasion, we especially
remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and we
pray for the families and friends they have left behind.’
“Mexico has lost too many heroes in the fight against criminals
and drug cartels. Today, we are flying the flag at half mast
in their honor, and in honor of their colleagues who uphold
law and order in the United States and around the world. These
brave men and women inspire us by their sacrifice and commitment
to sustain free, peaceful and democratic societies.”
