Secretary Chertoff Visits Mexico
by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, July 18, 2008 - “Michael Chertoff, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, came to Mexico City on July 17 and 18 to discuss ongoing cooperation on regional security issues with the government of Mexico. He met with Secretary of Government Juan Camilo Mouriño, Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa, Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora, Secretary of National Defense Guillermo Galvan Galvan, Secretary of the Navy Mariano Francisco Saynez Mendoza, Secretary of Public Security Genaro Garcia Luna as well as other key leaders within the Mexican Government.
“Secretary Chertoff and I, and the representatives of the Government of Mexico discussed Mexico’s many successes combating drug cartels as well as a broad range of law enforcement issues; in particular— measures to better coordinate our efforts on the interdiction of narcotics and border enforcement and more aggressive ways to disrupt the flow of arms into Mexico, all part of moving forward on the implementation of the Merida Initiative. From Mexico City, Secretary Chertoff will travel to Brazil.”
