It’s Not Too Late to Participate Check Your Registration
Status
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, September 18, 2008 - “I want to encourage all
United States citizens in Mexico, whether dual nationals,
residents here, or on an extended visit, to take a few moments
to ensure that you are registered to vote in the upcoming
general election, and that your state officials know where
to send your ballot if you are voting absentee.
“Time is short -- though requirements vary from state to
state, most states will accept registrations up to 30 days
before the election.
“Participation in our great democracy is a sacred trust.
Our government, at the state and federal level, has made voting
in the presidential elections more inclusive than ever. If
you are a citizen of the United States residing in Mexico,
you should be registered to vote with local officials in the
place you last lived in the U.S. If you have never lived in
the U.S., many states will allow you to register based on
the last address of your parents.
“A wealth of information, including registration forms and
addresses of local election officials, is available at the
Federal Voting Assistance Program website, www.fvap.gov.
This site also has links to political parties, independent
organizations and state ballot issues. The Embassy and our
consulates throughout Mexico also have this information, and
dedicated voting officers will assist you if you need help
in determining where to send a registration or change of address.
“Of course, with the privilege of voting in the U.S. election
also comes an awesome responsibility -- to be well informed
and know where the candidates stand on the issues that are
important to you and to our great country. So, register, prepare,
cast your ballot and be part of making the next four years
of our great nation’s history.”
