Art Exhibit “Colors of the Wind” Opens in Houston, Texas

Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza

Mexico City, October 2, 2008 - “I had the pleasure of traveling today to Houston, Texas, to join Sylvia Garcia-Escamilla, Founding President of the John Langdon Down Foundation, and Carlos Ignacio Gonzalez Magallon, Consul of Mexico in that city, in inaugurating the exhibit of paintings, engravings and lithographs of the Mexican School of Down Art at the Fulbright Tower.

“Shortly after I came to Mexico, I was privileged to meet Sylvia Escamilla. She showed me how, at the Mexican School of Down Art, young artists develop their skills and, by creating this ‘pictorial poetry,’ they discover a new way to feel productive and useful. I was so taken by the art I saw that I used ‘Bullfighter,’ by Victor Mendez, for the Christmas card I sent that year. I am delighted that this and other works, brought together in the ‘Colors of the Wind’ exhibit, can now be enjoyed in my home state.

“Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that represents the most common reason for cognitive disabilities in the world. Although the origin of this condition is still unknown, it is not related to nationality, race, religion or socioeconomic status. With specialized care and education, however, a child with Down Syndrome can do anything an average child can do. It is important, whenever possible, to ensure that those services are provided shortly after birth in order to stimulate the acquisition of abilities and skills that support the development and contribute to improve the quality of life of children with Down Syndrome.

“This exhibit will be at the Fulbright Tower in Houston until November 21, and will be followed by other exhibits of the Mexican School of Down Art in various European cities, to keep showing the world the excellent art these young men and women are creating, and the important work of the John Langdon Down Foundation in Mexico.”
