Mexican Authorities Nab Eduardo Arellano Felix

Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza

Mexico City, October 27, 2008 - “I would like to congratulate the Government of Mexico for its excellent work in apprehending Eduardo Arellano Felix, the last of the original leaders of the Tijuana cartel to evade capture. This is another example of the positive results when U.S. and Mexican law enforcement agencies share information. Based in part on information provided by the DEA and the U.S. Marshals, Mexican Federal Police were able to locate and capture Eduardo Arellano Felix on Saturday, October 25 in Tijuana.

“Eduardo Arellano Felix is one of the most violent and dangerous cartel leaders in Mexico, and his arrest is a great victory for the people of both our countries. The State Department had offered a $5 million USD award for information leading to his capture, he had been designated a high priority target by the DEA, and he was wanted by Interpol in 180 countries. With his arrest, now all five of the Arellano Felix brothers who ran the Tijuana cartel have either been captured or killed.

“Eduardo Arellano Felix was wanted by Mexican authorities in connection with the murder of Roman Catholic Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo and other killings, drug trafficking charges, and numerous criminal acts. He is also charged in the United States with organized crime, drug trafficking, and money laundering offenses. Thanks to U.S.-Mexico law enforcement cooperation, he will now have to face justice.”
